Parallel play is not just for kids—it’s a powerful antidote to burnout and an integral part of your whole creative life. Whether you struggle to keep creative commitments to yourself, want to unwind in the evening without the need for social media or TV, or just like the company of creating in the presence of others, you are invited to join Faye and other creative friends from Keeping Creative Time who are resisting burnout together and quietly practicing their joy.

Text that reads: Expressive Stitch Collective.

This month during Co-Create Hour, I’ll be joining artists and teachers Liz Bessel and Hayley Perry in their Warren, Rhode Island, studio, alongside members of their community and you!

Learn more about their explorations into the magical world of mixed media fiber art on their YouTube channel, Expressive Stitch Collective.

ABOUT The Expressive Stitch Collective is a creative community dedicated to the art of slow stitching. Founded by Liz Bessel and Hayley Perry, two fiber artists working in the East Bay of Rhode Island, who found commonalities in their artistic processes and intentions. Through stitching, both artists have uncovered deeply expressive and personal themes within their artwork. They believe anyone can find their artistic voice by letting go and opening themselves to experimentation. In 2024, they received a Gathering Grant from Fiber Art Now to teach “The Art of Expressive Stitching” to public library audiences.

How it Works:

If you’re unfamiliar with parallel play, it’s two or more people in the same space independently playing or working on an activity. Kids do it all the time, and adults can benefit from it too.

Schedule

7:15-7:30pm: Zoom room opens with community check in
7:30-8:15pm: Parallel playtime begins (45 minutes)
8:15-8:30pm: Zoom room closes with community check out

You are welcome to join at any time and stay for as long as you can.

Some possible parallel play activities include:

  • reading / writing / journaling

  • knitting / crochet / embroidery

  • coloring / drawing / painting

  • jigsaw puzzles / crossword puzzles / Legos

  • cooking / baking / menu planning

  • playing a musical instrument

  • or any craft you can do with your hands (woodworking, basket weaving, jewelry making, sewing, letter writing—there are no limits!)

The link to join is for paid subscribers, so it’s behind the paywall. Paid subscriptions start at $4/mo (for an annual subscription), and help me do my creative work as a writer, editor, and holistic librarian for Library of Care.
